GIS Data Model for Interior Spaces

Penobscot Bay Media is a leader in the implementation of GIS inside the building footprint. Our years of designing solutions for facilities GIS give us an extraordinary understanding of the requirements of facilities managers and program managers relating to the built environment. Finding no satisfactory model in the marketplace, we have developed a GIS data model specifically to address these requirements. This data model directly supports analysis and reporting based on the Buildings Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) standards for floor plan definition as well as the Postsecondary Educational Facilities Inventory and Classification Manual (FICM) standard popular in the academic facility world. As such, our data model includes full attribution for form, function and assignment and the capability to model n-tier organization hierarchy necessary for military organizations. We have built our data model specifically on the ESRI Geodatabase so that we can take full advantage of the subtype capabilities and topological relationships available only on the ESRI Geodatabase platform.

The Penobscot Bay Media Data Model for Interior Spaces also maps to IFC BIM definitions for the exchange of geometry definitions although the current IFC and BIM models lack sufficient attribution to fully implement a BOMA or FICM compliant data model.

Penobscot Bay Media is publishing its data model to serve as a design template for consideration by organizations that are designing data model standards that are appropriate for their organization. We welcome feedback on the data model, and we look forward to collaborating with other facility GIS pioneers to refine this data model.
